To contract with us as a freelancer (業務委託) at a salon in Japan, you must be registered as a qualified invoice issuer (適格請求書発行事業者, the Japanese invoice system). Please read this before you apply.
What we need
- You already hold a registration number (T + 13 digits), or
- You can complete registration before your contract starts
What registration means for you (important)
- Even if you were previously a tax-exempt business, you become liable to file and pay Japanese consumption tax.
- You may take on the work and cost of calculating the tax yourself, or of engaging an accountant.
- Registration normally takes about 3-4 weeks to come through.
This is a significant change to how you run your business, so please apply only once you are comfortable with it. You are welcome to raise any questions during the selection process, and we will share what we can, including our tax adviser's view.
This requirement does not apply if you are applying as a full-time or part-time employee.
